Money has haunted me longer than any ex. Thinking of it as a lover suddenly made everything click.

I grew up with a bit more than the basics, but my parents always felt scarce deep down. As if the universe were on a budget, I grew a toxic relationship with work and money, just as my dad did. I also overspent to fill the hole it dug. No big fat ass salaries could ever make it sustainable in the long run.

I worked hard, giving myself away to jobs that rarely felt fulfilling. I sold my energy for cash, which would be spent to make me feel okay about working the next day. Weirdly, it felt like a sort of status.

Burnout after burnout, I stumbled on a truth I wish my dad had known. Life gets not only more enjoyable when you do work you enjoy, but also somehow cheaper. You might even earn less, but it’s much more abundant. You still need to have your basic needs met, of course, but what comes after changes completely. Especially if you rejoice in it.

I don’t feel like counting, so I never stick to a budget. I don’t invest, so “money works for me” (as they say); instead, I make small investments to hide it and find it like an Easter egg. Maybe that’s why I feel lucky.

Now, just like I quit overeating from anxiety, I don’t buy things to fill a void. My cup is full by doing the job itself and allowing myself to do it. The cash is an extra.

Money is a tool that enables my creation.
It’s still very important, but not the reason I create.

“Love money and let money love you back,” — A mentor said it. No giggle, no joke.

I didn’t understand it then and just walked away thinking: what’s the actual f*ck?
The other day, I stumbled on something that finally clicked:

“When Money Becomes Your Lover”

As crazy as it sounds, seeing it written out finally made the idea sink in.
